Origins

The 'One Forest Vision Initiative' (OFVi) was presented at the 'One Forest Summit' (Libreville, March 2023) and enshrined in the Libreville Plan. It is part of the international negotiations for the conservation of tropical forests and in line with the targets set out in the Paris Agreement and COP15 Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (Protect 30% of Earth’s lands, oceans, coastal areas and inland waters by 2030). The Country Packages (CP) were launched at the G7 summit in Hiroshima in May 2023. They are the result of coordination between the Positive Conservation Partnerships (PCP) proposed by France at COP27 and the Forest and Climate Leaders’ Partnership. The initiative provides support for the research component of some of the CP signatory countries.

A dedicated budget of €15 million over 5 years has been made available by the MESR and the MEAE from 2023.

Contribution principles

The initiative was pioneered by 6 major research organisations (CEA, Cirad, CNRS, INRAE, IRD, MNHN) and coordinated by INRAE, CIRAD and IRD. It mobilises higher education institutions (universities, schools) via the Joint Research Units (UMR) of the organisations and via national research infrastructures to develop the following:

  • Cooperative research with partners in tropical forest countries, to help them achieve full capacity and enhance their conservation efforts on an internationally recognised scientific basis.
  • Data access and processing services (spatial and in situ), value-added products and open knowledge respecting the FAIR principles so that the data produced is "easy to find, accessible, interoperable and reusable". This contribution, backed up by shared data and expertise infrastructures, guarantees countries' full sovereignty over the entire cycle of scientific data relating to forest conservation.
  • Interdisciplinary, or even transdisciplinary, scientific approaches to take account of the range of issues linked to forest conservation, such as climate, biodiversity, water, and the rights of indigenous peoples and local communities.
  • A scientific contribution that directly supports countries' conservation efforts undertaken within the framework of the CPs.
